Carrying Forward a Legacy of Love and Service
In 2022 we experienced a profound loss with the passing of our founder, Patricia Pagaja. Her mission did not end with her — it lives on in the work we continue today.
A Story of Compassion in Action — Serving vulnerable children in Malawi since 2002.
In the early 2000s, many children in Mtonda Village, within the city of Blantyre, Malawi, were suffering in silence. A significant number had lost one or both parents and were living without adequate food, clothing, education, or emotional support. The need for help in the community was urgent. Moved by deep compassion and guided by her faith, Mrs. Patricia Pagaja felt called to respond.
The mission was simple yet powerful: to provide nutritious meals, basic education, encouragement, and spiritual guidance.
Moved by deep compassion and guided by her faith, Mrs. Patricia Pagaja took a bold step. She secured a rental property and established a small community center to serve orphaned children and elderly members of Mtonda Village. The center provided shelter for several children and space for basic primary school classes. It was officially registered as the Goodwill Orphan and Aged Care Ministry Center.
As the program grew, it became increasingly clear how deeply poverty and loss had affected the community. Many children lacked balanced meals, proper clothing, and access to quality education. Mrs. Pagaja's son, Phillip, and his wife, Sekani — both working in the banking sector at the time — joined the effort. They collected donated clothing and recruited volunteer teachers.
For the first three years, funding came primarily from Mrs. Pagaja's retirement income and small donations. However, rising rental costs eventually made it financially unsustainable to continue operating the facility.
Despite the facility closing at the end of 2005, the mission continued. Determined to keep serving the children, Mrs. Pagaja sought permission from local village leaders to operate a feeding program and daytime activities from her own home. Permission was granted, and the outreach moved forward.
She approached various organizations for assistance, including the Seventh-day Adventist Church, Malawi Union. While formal institutional support remained limited, she faithfully maintained the feeding program and hosted occasional gatherings such as Christmas celebrations and children's activities at her residence.
Reach International began supporting the program with food assistance, including supplies of corn flour and vegetables. Additionally, faithful members of the Carmel Seventh-day Adventist Church in Indiana, USA, have consistently supported the program through personal financial contributions since 2011.
Approximately 50 registered children regularly participated in the feeding program. Due to financial limitations, enrollment had to be carefully managed, even though the need in the community remained far greater.
In 2022, Mrs. Patricia Pagaja, the founder of the ministry, passed away. Her passing left behind a grieving family and a heartbroken community. For more than two decades, she had been a source of hope to vulnerable children and elderly individuals in Mtonda Village.
Her legacy of compassion, faith, and unwavering dedication continues to inspire the work being done today. The family she inspired now carries her vision forward, ensuring that her dream of helping vulnerable children lives on.
Today, Philadelphia Center for Help continues the mission that Mrs. Pagaja began. Under the leadership of her family, the organization provides feeding programs, educational support, mentorship, and community outreach to vulnerable children in Mtonda Village.
The vision remains the same: to give children more than support — to give them hope. With continued support from partners, volunteers, and donors around the world, we are building toward a brighter future for the children of Malawi.
